A grand antique Victorian guard chain from the late 19^th Century made up of faceted cable links and interlocking fetter links with jagged edges that lead to the claw clasp at the bottom. It’s all modelled in a bright 9ct yellow gold and has developed a lovely patina over time.

Guard chains were at the height of popularity in the 18^th & 19^th Century. Both fashionable and practical, they were deliberately long enough to be tucked into a belt and the clasp was usually adorned with a pocket watch, lorgnette or muff. 

It has a good weight and length, measuring 58 inches so it can be worn as one long chain or looped twice around the neck to make two festoons of gold.
